Pastor Sanford C. Mitchell, 77

Pastor Sanford Carveth Mitchell, 77 of Ashland, Ohio, died Saturday, March 23, 2019 with his family by his side.

Pastor Mitchell was born in Columbus, Ohio, grew up in Mansfield, and graduated from Wittenberg University with a BA in history. Following studies at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., Pastor Mitchell earned a Master’s in Theology from Hamma School of Theology in Springfield, Ohio, and a Master’s in American History from Bowling Green State University.

He served as pastor for four years at First Lutheran Church in Findlay, Ohio; for seven years at Zion’s Lutheran Church in Defiance, Ohio; and for 37 years at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ashland, Ohio. He served as Pastor Evangelist of the national Lutheran Church for 14 years and on the Board of Directors of Wittenberg University.

Pastor Mitchell served as adjunct professor of homiletics at Ashland Theological Seminary and professor of homiletics for the seminary consortium’s Doctor of Ministry program at Methesco Seminary in Delaware, Ohio. He is former editor of the clergy journal, Homiletics, which provides weekly sermon helps for the Unified Lectionary Series.

In Ashland, he spent 25 years as Chairman of the Personnel Committee for the YMCA. In 1991, Ashland Theological Seminary awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.

In 1965, Pastor Mitchell married Judith Weber of Findlay, Ohio, who survives him. He also leaves sons Jeffrey Mitchell, his children Hannah and Nathan, and Rodney Mitchell (Megan) and their children Alexa and Reece; sister Kathryn Mitchell Taylor and her daughter Lindsay of Charlotte, NC; aunt Elizabeth Burrier and her daughter Beth, from Zanesville, Ohio. Pastor Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Doctor and Mrs. Carveth P. Mitchell of Charlotte, NC.

Pastor Mitchell was known for his passion for serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his deep love for his family and community. He enjoyed water skiing, fishing, and chopping wood for his wood-burning furnace, playing ping-pong or volleyball, and participating in spirited card games with his grandchildren who loved it when they could beat “Papa.” He had a love of and talent for music and played piano, guitar, banjo, and other instruments with groups at his various congregations. Pastor Mitchell – husband, father, brother, minister, and friend - will be profoundly missed.

I have just learned of Sandy's death. Please accept my condolences and be assured of my prayers of intercession for you during the coming days and weeks. I remember well the many conversations Sandy and I had at various gatherings, and I am especially thankful for the time he gave an evangelism class I taught many years ago. I treasure the time I spent at your home that evening and am grateful for the enthusiasm for evangelism we shared.

Pastor Mitchell was truly a God send to us, at Stone Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Ashland. Our church was struggling the past few years as members of the ELCA, and we knew a change was sorely needed. We were unsure what direction we would be going, other than that the congregation was determined to remain a Lutheran church. Pastor Sandy welcomed me, and took me under his wing. He offered guidance and direction to our church Council while we tried to look at our options, and as we communicated those to our congregation. He directed me to Bishop Bradosky, and the Bishop and I formed a wonderful relationship. Pastor Mitchell was instrumental in explaining everything about the NALC to our Council in numerous meetings, and then later, to our entire congregation. Pastor Mitchell offered himself to be of any assistance he could be to our congregation as we began to explore all of our options. From day one, he became a fixture at our church, even though he was already in failing health, and he worked with us as we began the transition away from the ELCA to the NALC. Pastor Mitchell offered to assist us entirely, as we went through that rather lengthy process, and he simply became our go to Pastor. He even offered to come in to do our Fall Bible Study classes during the week so those classes could continue. His help was an inspiration to all of us, his love for the church, and his love for our Lord was without question, simply amazing. His last involvement was to help us get an Interim Pastor that he knew recently relocated to our area, and that was Pastor Cathy Ammlung. At this juncture, the Bible study had ended for the year, he helped us secure an Interim Pastor, and our transition to the NALC was completed. God has a plan for everything, and for each of us, and we truly believe that God sent Pastor Sandy to us to complete one more mission/task for Him, and that was to help and guide us. We can't thank him enough for all he has done for us, Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife, and to his family, that he spoke of often, and whom he dearly cherished and loved. May the good Lord bring all of you peace and comfort at this difficult time.
