John Robert Sommers, 91 of Ashland passed away Friday, April 12, 2019 in the Kingston of Ashland.
He was born on March 15, 1928 to the late John Wesley and Bertha (nee Colburn) Sommers.
John proudly served in the United States Army and Air Force during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
He married the love of his life, the former Esther Benner on August 5, 1957.
John retired after many years from U-Brand. He was a bowling enthusiasts in many leagues and assisted children learn the sport and also enjoyed playing golf.
He is survived by his son, Robert (Tracy) Sommers; two grandsons, Michael Hetrick and Joshua Sommers; one granddaughter, Julie Young; his great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Hetrick and Hudson Young; three brothers, Wesley Sommers, David (Judy) Sommers, and James Sommers; one sister, Joy (Reverend Gary) Draper Campbell; and many nieces & nephews.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by one step-mother, Axline (nee Yerks) Sommers; his wife of 57 years, Esther Sommers who passed away on March 27, 2015; his sisters, Emma McIntyre, Betty Guttenburg, Harriet Scott, Margaret (Peggy) Brown, Freda Prather, Clara Coy, Marguerite “Margie” Amstutz, Nellie Workman and Kathryn (Kate) Robertson.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bethel Baptist Church, 575 US 250, Savannah, Ohio 44874 with Reverend John Bouquet officiating. The Ashland Veteran’s Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. Interment will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park.
