I met Jim and Jill Welch in the late 70's when I came to Ohio with John Runkle, and Jim and I hit it off and became pretty good friends. I used to stay at their house on the farm in Polk once in a while, they treated me like family and I have great memories of that. Jim and I went to Florida when I was home on leave from the Navy, we had a really good time and it was pretty much a whirlwind trip. Jim always pulled pranks on me, and I finally got to get even with him on that trip. He was sleeping and I was driving when we got into Florida, we had a tight schedule so it was around midnight when we drove across the border. An owl flew in front of my car and I hit it on the passenger side headlight - busted the light out! There were feathers everywhere and I immediately slammed on the brakes and pulled over to the side of the road. Jim was totally startled out of sleep when it happened and was repeatedly yelling "what happened? What happened?" I just looked over at him and said "Don't worry, it was just a hitch-hiker" and I shook my head. Jim's mouth just dropped open and he was horrified! I said something like "I think we had better get moving before the cops show up" and Jim jumped out of the car and started looking for the injured hitch-hiker! I laughed really hard and he was a bit miffed at me over that - but he really deserved that with all the pranks he pulled on me! I will miss Jim, and I will always cherish the times with Jim and Jill, riding around in the Trans Am with the T-tops off, going to fast-pitch softball games, and being treated just like family when I was with them!
