Marilyn A. Franklin, 85, of Ashland, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 20, 2019 at Kingston of Ashland following a short illness.
She was born in Ashland, Ohio on November 5, 1933 to the late Kenneth Elwyn “Doc” and Alice Louise (Gregory) Furrow.
Marilyn was a graduate of Ashland High School class of 1951 and a cum laude graduate of Ashland College with a B.S. in Management.
She began her working career at age 14 as a part-time banquet server at the Country Club of Ashland. Later employments included various office positions in Ashland, New London and Chicago.
Her first management opportunity was with Creative Composition, a typesetting firm in Ashland. She then originated and was the director of the Composition Services Division at Ashland University, the department which produced all the institution’s publications.
In 1984, when Tom & Ann Wurster decided to expand Bookmasters, Inc. from a sales organization into a complete book manufacturer, they brought Marilyn in to establish the first production departments: typesetting and prepress. She retired from Bookmasters, Inc. as manager of Publishing Services.
In retirement, Marilyn was the first manager of the Essex House apartments in the former Home Company building.
She was a member of the First Christian Church where she was a member of the chancel choir, served as an elder and on various committees. She had served on the board of the Ashland Historical Society, and the executive board of the Friends of the Ashland University Library and was a member of the Advisory Council of the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on aging.
She loved to read and spend time with her many friends, some from her childhood.
She is survived by her son David (Kathy) Franklin of Ashland; her sister, Sharon Furrow of Oberlin, two step grandchildren, Nick (Melody) Jordan and Tara (Jared Hubbard) Jordan; four great grandchildren, Rachel, Christopher, Lilah and Gavin who were very dear to her. She is also survived by four nieces & nephews, many friends, and her cousins she met weekly with at Burger King.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Joyce Haugh and a half-brother, Jeff Furrow.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Ashland, with Pastor Rich Pate officiating. I've know Marilyn ever since I can remember. She was a close friend of my sister and lived across the street. Always a very nice person and interested in helping others. She'll be missed by many. God will greet her with open arms.
Prayers to the family and God be with you.

I am so sad to hear this news. Marilyn was a friend and mentor who taught me and helped me in so many generous ways. She was instrumental in helping me understand the ins and outs of small press publishing and, through a million kindnesses, helped my little family get off to a good start. She was kind, supportive, and funny, and I will always be grateful that she graced my life. — Linda Westfall Spurrier, Hamilton, Ohio
