Bruce L. Bookmyer, 82 of Ashland, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2019 in the Kingston of Ashland.
He was born on May 8, 1937 in Canton, Ohio, the son of the late John and Katherine “Katie” (nee Decker) Bookmyer.
Bruce was a 1955 graduate of Canton Timken High School. Following his graduation, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in business from Kent State University. Later in his career, Bruce earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Ashland University.
He began his career in 1959 at the Hess & Clark company as an accountant. Bruce climbed the corporate ladder holding several positions within the company, becoming President in 1989. He retired in 1999 after 40 years of service.
Bruce married the love of his life the, former Shirley (Franks) on February 14, 1960. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to his family who knew him best.
Bruce was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, holding numerous positions, YMBC, Rotary Club of Ashland, served on the Mental Health and Recovery Board, United Way, and the Ashland County-City Health Department. He also was a 40 year volunteer fireman for Ashland.
He was an avid car enthusiast, owning many throughout his life, a former race car driver, and enjoyed his train club for many years. Bruce was a sports fan, always showing his support for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Kent State University where he played football, and Ashland University. Most of all, Bruce loved watching his grandchildren’s activities and being a part of their lives.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Bookmyer of Ashland; one daughter, Leann (Dirk) Anderson of Naples, Florida; two sons, John (Kim) Bookmyer of Zionsville, Indiana and Ronnie (Dawn) Bookmyer of Powell; four grandchildren, Brennan (Kaitlyn), Elizabeth, Tyler, and Emily Bookmyer; one great granddaughter, Evelyn; one sister, Beth (Don) Johnson of Dalton; one nephew, Garrick Johnson; and special relatives, Awilda “Will” Torres, Heather Herrick, Ciara Atkinson, and Willough Herrick.
Bruce is preceded in death by his father, John Bookmyer; and his mother and step father, Katherine “Katie” and Woodrow “Woody” Meier.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, September 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Christ United Methodist Church, 1140 Claremont Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805 with Reverend Laura White, Reverend Tom Snyder, and Reverend Dale Turner officiating. Friends may call Thursday, September 12, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home.
