Elizabeth P. “Betty” Helmsin, 93 of Ashland passed away, Thursday morning November 28, 2019 in the Bradford House at Brethren Care Village.
She was born on December 27, 1925, the daughter of the late Pieter and Catherina Poth Sr. in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
Betty was a 1944 graduate of Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, West Virginia. She went on to attend the Ohio State University taking courses in hospital accounting. Betty would later attend Mansfield Technical School where she took computer science courses.
She married the love of her life, Guy R. Helmsin on January 5, 1959 who preceded her in death on February 4, 1981.
Betty served as the Director of Fiscal Services at Grant Hospital in Columbus, then in 1971 was hired as Comptroller at Samaritan Hospital in Ashland. Betty was later promoted to Vice President of Finance in 1978 and retired from Samaritan in December of 1990 after nearly 20 years of service.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, serving as church treasurer and on church council from 1998 to 2001 and attended Trinity Lutheran Church regularly.
Betty was an active lady involved in many organizations throughout her life. She was an active member of the Ohio Hospital Association, Health Care Financial Management former Treasurer and awards Secretary, Altrusa Foundation, Ashland City County Council, Ashland County AARP, Ashland County Council on Aging, Hospice of North Central Ohio, American Legion Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary, and the Ashland Evening Lions Club. Betty was honored as one of the Ashland County Women of Achievement several years ago.
She loved to read, cook, and enjoyed gardening and lawn care. Betty was also an avid traveler, bowler and bingo player.
Betty is survived by one step-daughter, Janalee Bauschka of Olympia Washington; two step grandchildren, Michael Bauschka of Tucson, Arizona and Myelle Bauschka Littman of Phoenix, Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Linda (Bill) Clouser of Ashland and Becky (Gene) Weimer of Ashland.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, December 6, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Reverend Michael Koch and Reverend Jean Coleman officiating. Following the service, a meal and time of fellowship will be held in the Legacy Room of the funeral home. She will be laid to rest with her husband in Sunset Cemetery in Galloway. Friends may call Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 3 pm to 6 pm in the funeral home with Lion’s services during visitation.
