Russell J. Maier, 73 of West Salem passed away, Thursday afternoon, December 26, 2019 in Louis Stokes VA Medical Center.
He was born October 6, 1946 the son of Leonard and Ruth (Cowell) Maier in Lakewood, Ohio.
Russ was a 1964 of John Marshall High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Following his graduation, he proudly served in the United State Navy aboard the USS Richard E. Byrd Naval Destroyer. He served for three years and received an honorable discharge in 1967.
That same year on December 2nd, Russ married the love of his life, the former Linda Lee Wishner. Russ and Linda celebrated 48 years of devotion and happiness together. Linda preceded him in death on October 11, 2016.
He retired from AT&T, formerly known as Ohio Bell going on to fulfill his dream of building a home on a lake as to fish away his retirement years.
Russ was an avid fisherman who enjoyed collecting antique fishing lures. When the boys were younger he loved taking his family on annual vacations on Little Manistique Lake in Curtis, Michigan. He was also an Ohio State University fan; and loved his canine companions throughout his life. Russ was a committed blood and apheresis donor through the American Red Cross.
He is survived by two sons, Christopher Maier of West Salem and Jason (Ashley) Maier of Warren, Pennsylvania; his mother, Mrs. Ruth Maier of Sandusky; four grandchildren, Christian (Kristina) Maier of Westerville, Grace Maier of West Salem, and Adon and Kendyl Maier of Warren, Pennsylvania; one sister, Reverend Lenore Kure of Sandusky; and four brothers, David (Laurel) Maier of Bay Village, Ron (Bridgette) Maier of Russell Pennsylvania, John (Eileen) Maier of Parma, and Eric Maier of Columbus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Russ is preceded in death by his father; and his loving wife, Linda.
Friends may call, Thursday, January 2, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home 313 Center St. Ashland, Ohio 44805. Funeral services will be held, Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in the Funeral Home with his son, Reverend Jason Maier officiating. A meal and time of fellowship will follow the service in the Legacy Room of the funeral home. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery later in the day.
