Vernard “Ben” Strouse, 92 of Ashland passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 in University Hospital in Elyria.
He was born on June 26, 1928 in Jelloway the son of the late Everett and Iva Jane Strouse.
Ben graduated from Loudonville High School, Class of 1946, after humble beginnings from a one room schoolhouse. He proudly served in the Army National Guard.
He married the love of his life, the former Marjorie McCall on June 13, 1954.
Ben retired from Lawson’s/Dairy Mart after many years of service. He worked previously at Southern Sash and Kroger. Following his retirement, Ben worked as a school bus driver for Ashland City Schools for 13 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Ben was a devoted masonic lodge member having belonged to several lodges including Mansfield Commandery #221, Canton Chapter #84, Canton Council #35, and Conrad Lodge #271. Ben volunteered at both Samaritan Hospital and Hospice of North Central Ohio. He was an avid animal lover, especially his late canine companion, Ginger.
Ben is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Marjorie Strouse of Ashland; three daughters, Susan (Dan) Barcus of Houston, Texas, Karen Cook of Hayesville, Beverly (Mark) Stewart, of Ravenna; one son, Timothy (Lee) Strouse of North Ridgeville; seven grandchildren, Sarah (Marty) Filip of Fate, Texas, Chris Barcus of Houston, Texas, Kyle Cook of Hayesville, Monica (Andrew) Pitts of Indianapolis, Indiana, Meredith (Kyle) Stanhope of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, Kelsey Strouse of North Ridgeville, and Zachary Strouse of North Ridgeville; seven great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary (Vance) Grube of DeSoto, Kansas.
In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Dennis, and Samuel Strouse.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Reverend Tom Snyder and Reverend Alan Bevere officiating. A meal and time of fellowship will be held immediately after the service in the Legacy Room of the funeral home. Interment will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
