Ashland – John Edward Cicillian, age 94 of Ashland, passed away peacefully in his home in the early hours of Presidents’ Day, February 15, 2021.
He was born October 7, 1926, in Hobart, Indiana, as one of five children to the late John J. and Anna Rose (Dujmovich) Cicillian.
John married his lifelong travel and dance partner, the love of his life Iva Irene Chase on May 5, 1951. He proudly served in the United States Navy, with a tour in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
After being honorably discharged, John began his studies at Purdue University, completing his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1951. John retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation, District Three, as the Real Estate Engineer on April 28, 1988, after 37 years of distinguished service, which included work to build the Milan, Ohio bypass, Interstates 71, 76, 90, and 27, along with countless other state roads.
Appointed to Ashland City Planning Commission on March 1, 1966, John dutifully served in that role for 28 years. John was a faithful member of St. Edward Catholic Church for nearly 70 years, serving as an usher and bingo caller and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
John was a life member of the VFW Post 1067, managing the finances as its Quartermaster for 15 years – until he was 89 years old. John also served as bugler with the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard and was a lifetime member of Amvets.
John is survived by his three children John R. (Carolyn Steffen) Cicillian, Sally A. (Kevin) Mohrman, and Douglas A. (Leanne Hutton) Cicillian, his four grandchildren Zachariah (Amber) Cicillian, Jeffrey (Heather Hofacre) Mohrman, Kearra (Ben) Blaser, and Magdalen Cicillian, six great-grandchildren, his sister JoAnne Cicillian Daras, and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife Irene of 48 years, his sisters Martha and Mary Ann and his brother Edward.
A private family mass will be held, Monday, February 22, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church with Father Rod Kreidler presiding. The service will be Livestreamed from both St. Edward Facebook page and website, stedwardashland.org. Immediately following, Interment will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park, where the Ashland Veteran's Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
