Rebecca Lynn Thompson, 49 of Ashland passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021 in the Ohio State University Medical Center.
She was born on May 3, 1971 in Ashland, the daughter of Paul V. and Barbara (nee Icenhour) Thompson.
Rebecca attended Ashland High School. Throughout her life, Rebecca enjoyed writing, poetry, reading books, and cooking. She was a church member of the Salvation Army and a member of the Eagles Aerie 2178.
Rebecca Thompson planned to be a strong advocate for those facing mental health challenges and physical disabilities. She never realized that she truly was – she made a difference through her writing and public speaking, by putting herself on the line to express her views strongly, revealing courage and a healthy touch of defiance. Rebecca routinely expressed views about not stigmatizing those with “labels.” She was proud of being a peer supporter, aiming to help others in their journeys toward recovery and healing.
If you never met Rebecca or got to know her, you have sustained a loss. She had a gentle heart, aimed to empower others, was a skilled listener, and made one feel safe and warm. Rebecca celebrated others’ accomplishments with them. She was resilient when facing health-related physical problems, never letting them stand in her way.
If Rebecca was to send a message to all of us, it would be: “Peer support, when grounded in respect and confidentiality, opens the door to recovery. Listen to others, then make the choices and decisions that you believe are best. You are the expert about yourself and know what you have experienced, what challenges you have overcome. Trust yourself. Look toward the future and believe….”
Rebecca is survived by her loving mother, Barbara Balsizer of Ashland; her canine companion, Tigger; her feline companion, Mercedes; her half siblings, Darlene (Bud) Cayse of Ashland, Sharon McKinney of New Port Richey, Florida, Paul Thompson Jr. of North Carolina, Alan Thompson of Ashland, Debra Crossen of Ashland, Brian Thompson of Ashland and Michael Doerr of Wauseon; a dear friend, Meredith Pay of Savannah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rebecca will missed by her family and friends who knew her best.
She is preceded in death by her father, Paul V. Thompson; a stepfather, Robert J. Balsizer; two brothers, Bobby Brent McKinney and Milton Ray McKinney; and a canine companion, Arley-Girl.
